From blind spot warning lights, which let you know if there's someone you can't see, to front- and side-view cameras, the automobile industry is rapidly evolving. But is it right for you?
From Ford to Toyota to BMW, automakers’ sales have stalled – plunging to a 26-year low in November – as cash-strapped consumers cut back on spending. But there’s a silver lining if you’re in the market for a new ride. With lots nearly full and salesmen sitting idle, the Big Three and their competitors are pushing big bargains: employee pricing, 0% financing and cash incentives among others. But to be a savvy car shopper, you need a strategy.
Car shoppers today are more likely to buy used over new than ever before. But while going used is a great way to protect your bank account, you need to be extra careful to make sure you’re buying a safe vehicle.
One scam to be on the lookout for is airbag fraud. This happens when cars that have been in accidents never get their airbags replaces and instead have airbag compartments that are stuffed with things like rags or paper or foam. It happens more frequently than you might think. Carfax estimates that about one out of every 25 deployed airbags are replaces with either nonworking or dummy airbags.
Lauren Fix of the Car Care Council offers tips for preventing this type of dangerous fraud. First, if you’re purchasing a used car make sure you take it to an outside collision shop for a review and inspection. You should also do this if your car has been in an accident when the airbags deploy. A good shop should be able to tell you if the bags have been replaced. You can also take the car to the dealer to be ensured that you get original parts. (Watch the accompanying video for more.)
You can tell if the airbags on your new car have been replaced by making sure you run the VIN through Carfax, which offers this service for free at Carfax.com/airbag. But that’s assuming the accident has been report, and not all are. Again, make sure to have a technician look at it. And tell them to check the side impact airbags, too.
Hopefully, you will never need to find out first hand that your airbags have malfunctioned. This is where your anti-lock brakes come in. To make sure they’re working, pay attention to the ABS light on the dash. Don’t listen to technicians or mechanics who tell you this light ‘just comes on sometimes.’ If the light is on, get it checked out immediately. You can also find out if the ABS is working correctly by stepping on the brakes when the road is icy or wet. If the car starts to slide and doesn’t pulsate, you’ve got a problem.
And don’t forget about seatbelt trouble. When your car is in an accident, your seatbelt has two important functions: a pre-tensioner and a load-limited. The former makes the belt lock when you move forward quickly. The latter prevents the belt from breaking your collar bone if you stop short. Both parts – in fact, the entire seatbelt – should always be replaced after a major accident.
Never fear getting into a good fight with your insurance company over an accident. They will always try to go the cheapest route, but you should always push back and tell them it isn’t acceptable. If you can state your case without being adversarial, you can usually get what you want.
You don’t need to watch the Big Three automakers beg Congress for bailout money to know that the auto industry is in bad shape. For most of us, buying a new car is just not in the cards right now, no matter how badly we might need it. It means we have to take extra good care of what we’ve already got. Lauren Fix, an auto expert and professional race car driver, brings you five easy ways to maintain your old ride:

Make your ride last forever. = By Lauren Fix, The Car Coach®
Cars are your second most expensive investment and we have to take care of that investment. There's no reason why almost any late-model car or truck can't be counted on to last for 10 or more years and run reliably for well beyond 100,000 miles. The durability and reliability of modern cars is remarkable, provided they're treated properly.
What does proper treatment mean? Find out by reading your owner's manual cover to cover, especially the chapters dealing with maintenance. Follow these recommendations to the letter. Here are some further hints for helping your car live up to its potential:
1. Pay attention to what the factory says about maintenance. Engine components wear over time as do any moving component or part. For example - the timing belt or timing chain should be replaced at 50,000 miles (based on what the manual states, of course) to keep the motor running. If you fail to do it you could be looking at an expensive motor repair. Read your manual. If the factory says it's essential to flush the cooling system every three years at minimum - do it.
2. Brake system maintenance: Every car should have the entire brake system professionally "bled" (purged of old fluid) and refilled with new brake fluid at least every two years; otherwise you risk ruining the very expensive ABS pump, rotting the brake lines from the inside, and damaging the entire brake system. Why? Brake fluid absorbs moisture, and moisture is lethal but silent, rusting out the brakes and destroying your safety components. Major damage will occur before you even realize it - and by then it's too late.
2. Lubricant levels/regular changes. ItÂ’s critical to routinely check the engine oil and transmission fluid to assure they're at the proper level. Have these fluids changed (along with the appropriate filters) at least as often as recommended by the factory under "severe/heavy duty" conditions. This small investment will reap large benefits over the life of your vehicle.
3. Change your oil and fluids to synthetic lubricants. Although theyÂ’re more expensive per quart than ordinary motor oil and transmission fluid, the benefits of synthetic lubricants far outweigh the small initial cash outlay. Synthetics provide vastly superior performance, especially in extreme temperatures and severe service conditions. You can also extend change-out intervals when using synthetics as well, to further reduce actual cost.
4. Keep is lubed - spray the door hinges to avoid rust. Do it yourself so easily!
5. Keep yourself healthy too - replace the cabin air filter yourself or ask a local parts store to do it for FREE. The air inside the car can be more harmful than out side it.
6. Replace the headlights yourself can save you money and increase your visability.
7. High Resale value - by keeping it clean and free of rust
8. carry an emergency kit - be prepared for anything - its with what you will really need so that when things do go wrong you don't pay the price.
9. Alternative vehicles can last well over 200,000 as long as you take care of them (diesel, hybrid, and gasoline cars too.)
Skimping on car repairs and putting them off can lead to a dangerous vehicles and make it unsafe for others too! If you want to save money - DO IT YOUR SELF ITS EASY!!!
